Another tool I could not live with out in the kitchen is my Microplane. The Microplane is a soft handled Zester/Grater that originates from woodworking tools.
It is not cheap- you can find it for around $30-50 but I tell ya it is so worth it!
This grates even the hardest Parmesan Reggiano as well as other hard cheeses into fine lacy wisps. It’s also wonderful for effortless citrus zesting to add natural flavours to a lime buttercream or a basic vinaigrette, it grates fresh ginger and garlic with ease taking the fuss out of making any asian dish, Chocolate, anything- seriously this thing grates anything.
The blade is made from surgical grade stainless steel and has a comfortable plastic handle.
Dimensions: 30cm x 3.3cm
I remember growing up my Dad would always truss the Christmas Turkey, every year without fail there would not be a ball of string insight when he went to do this. There was the odd occasion we found a ball of red or green string reminiscent of the blue soup scene from Bridgette Jones diary flash to mind! Skewers were also used a couple of times, my Dad is great at good ol’ kiwi ingenuity, or he would have a rummage in the garage for twine- oh so hygienic!
A couple of years ago Mr Lid and I hosted the Family for Christmas Lunch and I was not going to suffer the same fate as my Dear Father! So Mr Lid and I went out with the soul purpose to get string for the turkey what we came home with was better than we could have imagined!
I introduce to you… The Food Loop
It is made from silicone so it is resistant to high heats, it is washable, it is reusable, it is brightly coloured so you don’t throw it away with the bones, it can be joined together to make it longer, it can be used on so many more things than just turkey.
This little guy should be in your draw, there have been times in my life when I wish he was in my handbag or in the very least in my car… there is nothing more annoying in having to extract juice from citrus and not being able to get every last drop.
It is not electronic so there is no plugging in. It is not big so there is no need to make a home for it in your kitchen. It is not expensive so there is no reason not to have one!
It is simple the bestest thing for squeezing juice out of limes, lemons or even oranges I have ever used.
They are found in almost all kitchen shops.
We love things that make our lives easier- even if its just little things- like having a salt and pepper grinder in one- so you can carry it and your plate of food at the same time! Or the shear ease of trying to fit in one dual grinder instead of two when packing up to go camping. I could go on- but I won’t.
After much looking around for the perfect grinder Mr Lid and I came across this…
It is the Bodum Bistro Salt and Pepper grinder. The ceramic grinder is slightly adjustable so salt and pepper get grinded to your desired coarseness. It is plastic so it doesn’t get slipery with dirty kitchen hands. It is as easy as turn left for Salt and Right for Pepper. It even comes in a variety of colours to match your decor.
